Pufferfish and Their Care

Puffer fish have a great appeal with many fish keepers as they look adorable and there are many species to choose from, some are dwarf varieties, some can grow quite large but most of these species puffer fish can be very aggressive so lots or research should be carried out before they are purchased and added to any aquarium.

They get their common name from their unique ability to inflate themselves with air or water so that they can increase their body size up to three times their original size; this ploy is believed to ward off predators fooling them into thinking that the puffer fish is larger than it actually is. The only other fish that has this ability is the Porcupine fish; these are clearly differentiated from Puffer fish as their bodies are covered in spines.

Puffer fish can be found all over the world in various habitats, they are saltwater varieties, freshwater puffer fish and freshwater puffer fish that also inhabit brackish water conditions. One word of warning, all puffer fish, including freshwater puffer fish have a poison in their bodies, this is called tetrodotoxin and can paralyse humans if large enough quantities are ingested, in some cases it can also lead to fatalities. Some puffer fish are a delicacy in the East but the chefs have to be specially licensed to serve up this fish with the poison glands removed making them safe to eat.

Another reason that many keepers find puffer fish so appealing is their unique personalities, despite their aggression towards tank mates, they do become very tame towards their keepers and will swim to the front of the tank when the keeper approaches as they get ready for their next meal. Many of the species have really cute faces, one that comes to mind is the dog-faced puffer, and this fish has the puppy eyes that many people just cannot resist. The only downside is the aggression that they display to their tank mates and towards each other, this can turn really nasty with some specimens and they may even kill other puffer fish when defending their territories, this can be eased by keeping them in a roomy aquarium allowing each tank member the space to have their own territory, adding dcor and plants will help to divide the aquarium and break up each puffer fishes line of sight. A tight fitting lid should also be used, they are excellent jumpers and the last thing you want to happen is for your puffer fish to finish up on the carpet.

Puffer fish are also high waste producers, an excellent filtration system must be used to cope with the large bio load, regular water changes will also need to be performed, at least 10% weekly to keep the water quality high, any signs of the water quality dropping can bring on the onset of health problems for your puffer fish.

The diet of puffer fish is also crucial to keep them in top health and to keep them interested in eating properly. Puffer fish are greedy eaters when offered the correct foods, they may ignore commercial flakes or pellets, offering them live or frozen foods gives much better results. Prawns, lance fish, chopped earthworms, bloodworms and small pieces of fish can all be offered. One important aspect of the diet is providing the puffer fish with shelled crustaceans or snails to keep their beaks trimmed down, the shells will grind down the beak to an acceptable level, these beaks are growing all of the time, if they are allowed to get too long, your puffer fish will struggle to feed and you may have to trim the beak yourself to correct matters.

It has been said that African Pygmy Hedgehogs will use their play wheels during the night and some walk upto 10 miles in their wheel.

Do not feed your African Pygmy Hedgehog insects from the garden. They are also thought to be lactose intolerant please do not give them cows milk, if you needed to give a baby hedgehog milk then it should be goats milk.
Do not feed peanuts as they can get trapped in the roof of their mouths.

African Pygmy Hedgehogs Playtime

Toys, like children they love to play with toys. The most important purchase you can make is their wheel, they will spend amazing amounts of time in the wheel and this in turn is fantastic exercise and will stop them becoming bored. Make sure the wheel is plastic and not wire, we don’t like wires as their feet could get caught and damaged. Provide plenty of tunnels, noisy toys and balls etc, you can get hamster toys just make sure the tunnels are big enough, also give them a hiding area where they can sleep and go for peace!

They love to be cuddled by the family, as with all animals the more time you spend handling them the tamer they will be. If you can get them out for time in the evening their spines will go down so you and the family can stroke them like you would other pets.

Hedgehogs are seldom aggressive, in most cases they only ball up because they are scared. They rarely bite through aggression or fright, I have not been bitten yet! If they start licking your fingers there may be something tasty on them so licking is best stopped to avoid an accidental nip

Why Do So Many People Keep Pets

Have you ever wondered about this? I don’t know for sure, but with the relatively sudden appearance of a plethora of super pet stores and the burgeoning growth of the industry in general, my guess is that it might have something to do with people wanting to decrease the stress that plagues all of us.

Personally, we do not have any pets, because we have no timeor spacefor them and don’t want the extra work and responsibility.

But many people, especially those with children at home, for some reason do wish to care for one or more pets. And I realize that some parents simply yield to the “want ones” from their kids. And that’s okay, as long as they also teach those kids the responsibility that goes along with pet ownership. Sadly, many don’t.

Some single people seem to acquire pet(s) as a status symbol or as a means of meeting someone by establishing an excuse to speak to someone while out walking or running.

Still others are simply lonely and dote on their pet(s) as they might dote on a mate if they had one.

Now, you would think that anyone who has or would be thinking about acquiring a pet, especially a relatively large one, would already be a home owner, wouldn’t you? Well, if that’s what you think, you would be wrong!

How do I know that?

Because I’m a property manager, and it just boggles my mind the number of people who call and ask if we accept pets. We have both single rooms and one-bedroom apartments, but that doesn’t seem to faze these people.

I mean, some of these people have not one large dog or cat, but several . . . and they expect someone to rent them a small room or apartment? Makes you wonder what goes through their minds (if anything)!

Don’t get me wrong. I love cuddly animals and have had many pets in years past . . . but always in a house with a yard that we owned. And our dogs did their business in our yard, not on public grounds.

Then, of course, there are those home owners (or home renters, as the case may be), who allow their dogs to become nuisances in otherwise quiet neighborhoods. They bark incessantly for hours at a time, to the apparent unconcern of their owners, and disturb others’ peace.

Years ago, I remember resorting to sleeping with a box fan on “high” just so that I could get to sleep, because of a neighbor’s “pet.” When I complained to that neighbor, she told me that their Border Collie was a “watch” dog . . . really? How would they ever know if someone was intruding, because the dog barked non-stop? She could not have cared less if neighbors were being disturbed!

Again, the question is, why do these people insist on harboring these animals at the expense of their neighbors’ peace and quiet?

Could it be that this somehow relieves their stress? I do not see how that would be possible, and it certainly adds to the stress of their neighbors!

But caring for an animal does seem to contribute to the happiness and peace of mind of many. I know, for instance, of a nursing home where an Irish Setter roams the halls and brings joy and happiness to the faces of the folks there.

Finally, I know of several couples who have reached the point in their relationships where they seem to just tolerate each other, and their pets are mutually enjoyed so that they have sort of a “substitute” to fill in the gaps that are wanting in their relationships.

It is as if these kinds of people transfer their affection for another human being to the pet kingdom, and they’re losing a lot in the end.

Loving animals is one thing. Giving them precedence over human beings is quite another. Everything should be done in moderation.
